WEST CHESTER TWP. —

The owner of a new locally-owned pharmacy here is hoping personalized service is the elixir that helps grow his business.

Mak’s Family Pharmacy opened last week at 7324 Kingsgate Way in West Chester Twp., featuring prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as small appliances like vaporizers and respirators for asthma and monitors for blood pressure and diabetes.

Owner Augstin Makabu said he’s been in the pharmacy business for about 20 years with national and local companies, before starting his own business “just to be my own boss and to make a difference.”

“I have experience in it and I want to help my community and help people improve their lives,” said Makabu, a West Chester Twp. resident.

The store is a cozy 800 square feet, but expansion plans are a possibility in the next couple of years thanks to a neighboring vacant storefront.

“It’s just the beginning, but we hope eventually it will be larger,” Therese Makabu said.

Augustin Makabu said going up against big-name pharmacies means providing not only the best products possible, but also “more personalized service than being a chain store where you are a number.”

“In my store, we put a name with a face,” he said. “You’re greeted by name, you’re respected and you’re loved.”

It also helps that the shopping center, Kingsgate Plaza, is centrally located just south of Tylersville Road and features a large parking lot for convenient access.

“We’re across the street from TriHealth’s West Chester Medical Group, several pediatricians and an urgent care so it’s easy for the people coming from there to get their prescriptions filled,” Makabu said.

The business employs a part-time technician, in addition to Makabu and his wife.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The pharmacy accepts Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance plans. Free delivery is available in limited circumstances.

“You don’t have to leave the comfort of your home. We deliver right to your door,” Makabu said.
