A growing Louisville-based health care company will build an inpatient psychiatric facility in West Chester, creating 100 jobs.

Springstone Inc. plans a $10 million, 37,500-square-foot facility at the northeast corner of Union Centre Boulevard and Shepherd Farm Drive.

“The need for psychiatric and substance abuse services has gone up over the years, and inpatient services have been less easy for people to find and access,” said Vaughn Bell, Springstone vice president for business development. “We definitely think the demand is there.”

The one-story, 48-bed facility will be completed by next summer, she said.

Privately held Springstone treats “adults with mental health and addiction disorders, as well as mental health issues arising from geriatric conditions,” according to its website. In addition to inpatient services, it provides intensive outpatient treatment, family group therapy and community outreach.

The firm operates mental health hospitals in Newburgh and Lafayette, Ind., and Carrollton, Texas, each with between 45 and 48 beds. Another hospital, with 72 beds, is expected to open in Dublin, Ohio, in September. Springstone plans to build as many as 40 inpatient centers over the next six years, Bell said.

The West Chester hospital will occupy a 9.7-acre site that it bought from West Chester-based Schumacher Dugan Construction Co.

“West Chester has seen in recent years real growth in the medical and bioscience sectors,” said Barb Wilson, spokeswoman for West Chester Township.

Jobs at Springstone will pay an average of $52,000 a year, according to documents filed with West Chester Township.

Springstone joins other recent additions to mental health care locally, including Bridgewell Hospital. The mental health facility for seniors is ramping up business this quarter in a former Pleasant Ridge nursing home.
